Are you trying to take advantage of social bookmarking sites like Digg, but can’t seem to attract followers? Are you the only one that diggs or likes your posts? Don’t sweat it. Read this article to learn how to effectively double you’re “followers” when social bookmarking.

“Digging” and “liking” are essentially ways to approve of or give someone thumbs up for a post they have made. You can also “follow” someone to become friends and track their posts. Social media marketing is used by businesses today more than-ever before. Many companies have taken advantage of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Digg to reap the benefits of social media, but it can be a huge waste of time if done poorly.

You can easily measure your success by the number of people following you or by the number diggs or likes you get from your posts. If your fan base isn’t growing and no one is reading your posts then your may want to rethink your strategy.

Here are a few simple things you can do to drastically increase your followers.

Don’t Do the Follow Frenzy

Yes I’m talking to you Mr. “follow anyone and everyone until your mouse no longer works or until you reach your daily limit.” This is the “no good strategy” of logging into your account and following everyone on the first page, hoping they will follow you back.

The best way to double your followers when social bookmarking, is to apply real life social behaviors. You don’t want to be friends with people who don’t care about you or won’t take the time to get to know you. You also don’t want friends who won’t talk about anything interesting.

It’s the same when following people.

Those who are the most successful by building the biggest follower base, or obtaining the most diggs or likes all of have one thing in common: They post the most useful and interesting stories, videos, ect.

What Should I Post?

Since it’s so important to post quality content whether it’s a video, story, or article you may be asking, “What should I post?”

Similar to others, you might be posting anything that you can in hopes that it will double your followers when social bookmarking. Many users post excellent stories, articles, or videos, but, for whatever reason can’t get people to check out the post.

There are several things you can do to increase the likelihood of someone checking out your post:

Make it interesting
Think about what you want to read. If you have a choice between reading a boring story or an exciting story you’re going to choose the latter.
Make it useful
It’s ok to post an article or information about your business, but make it beneficial to the reader.
Post valuable information
Think about what people want to hear. They want to know something juicy, something big, something funny, or something that won’t waste their time.
Package it correctly
Always provide a hook in your title. People won’t check out your post unless they think it will be worth their time. Use the title to draw them in. “How to Double Your Followers When Social Bookmarking” is much more effective than-“Social Bookmarking”

Do the Intelligent Frenzy Follow

How do I follow intelligently to increase my follower base for social media?

It all starts with the same social behaviors we exhibit when conversing with individuals in person.

Think of the last time you were at a social gathering and you exchanged numbers with someone and actually got together with them at a later date. You probably didn’t exchange numbers with them out of the blue. Most likely, you talked with that person at some point and found that you had something in common. When it comes to sites like Digg, it works the same way.

Start reading people’s posts and commenting appropriately. I’m not talking about saying, “nice post”. I’m saying read their post and respond intelligently as if they were standing in front of you. After you comment, digg, or like their post then follow them. Chances are they will follow you back.

This is an effective strategy to start building your fan base. It is very effective when you’re trying to reach out to users with hundreds or thousands of followers.

This is especially important to keep in mind with these kinds of users because they most likely won’t reciprocate your follow unless you take a genuine interest in their posts. They already have enough people who simply follow them. They probably don’t need any more.

Icing on the Cake

Now that you have some of the basics down you can try a few small things that can help you double your followers when social bookmarking, target new users.

Remember when you first registered your account on the social bookmarking site and you had zero followers? You probably reciprocated with anyone and everyone who followed you. It goes the same for other new users. Search for those who have less then 150 followers and Digg, like, or comment on their posts.  I guarantee that they will respond.

With these tips,  you’ll be well on your way to being able to social bookmark with the best of them.
