You would be amazed at how many people ask me how to be number 1 on Google search. It works out okay though, because answering that question just so happens to be my job. The answer to that question is something that entails a ton of variables and is changing rapidly on a daily basis.

So here goes…Attempting to answer the all-important question: How to be number 1 on Google search? That’s what the rest of this post will discuss.

Do you really want to be number 1?

This may seem like a dumb question, but bear with me for a second. The reason that you want to be number 1 is probably because you want to either 1) make sales online or 2) collect leads from internet users.

Let’s take a second to put ourselves in the users’ perspective.

In either case, whether a user is going to be making a purchase or submitting their information into a form, they are close to the purchasing decision. And getting closer by the minute.

There is some evidence that as users get closer and closer to making a decision, they research more thoroughly, looking at the results further down the page, and even results on the 2nd and 3rd pages in a lot of cases.

So if by being in the lower positions you attract a smaller number of clicks from more qualified, ready-to-buy users, do you still want to know how to be number 1 on Google search?

Maybe you should focus your attention on being ranked between positions 5-6, where Internet Marketing Guru Perry Marshall declares provide the highest return on investment.

Just a thought.

Still want to know how to be number one on Google search?

Alright, so whether you buy that last point or not, here is the best known method of ranking well in Google, Yahoo!, and Bing…

1. Write new content pieces using the keywords that you want to rank for. Google says it themselves in their official guide to SEO (SEO stands for ‘search engine optimization’ in case you didn’t know and reading Google’s guide would be a very good place to start. Considering you’re looking to learn how to be number 1 on Google search. Probably a good idea to read their rules, right?)

2. Get high-quality, relevant sites to link to your site. Let’s say you sell jeans. One of the most powerful ways to get to the top of search results for queries about jeans is to get authoritative sites about jeans to link back to you. Well how do you do that? Refer back to #1, about the content. Now add the words “very high quality” in between the words “Write” and “new”. Did that make sense? What I mean is that by taking the time to create relevant, original, meaningful content, your site will naturally attract links from related sites. Also, you can always contact other webmasters and ask them. That works sometimes too.
