A Quick Guide To Local SEO Optimization Services

How do I get listed on Google Places (or in the “Maps” section)? How can I show up when customers are searching for me?

These are questions we get everyday. It’s pretty simple, but it does require some work. You don’t necessarily have to hire a consultant or a search marketing company.

Search marketing firms in Maryland can range between a few hundred, to several thousand dollars/month, which, if you’re a small business… may not be feasible.

So here is a quick checklist of things you can easily do yourself to improve your search engine ranking for local SEO in Baltimore (or really, anywhere for that matter).

Step 1: Locate and claim your listing

This part is pretty simple. Just go to Google and search for your company’s name, followed by the city that your office is located in. You’ll probably see a listing for yourself with a little map next to it. It will look something like this…

Then you just click on the little link right under the name of your business that says “Place page”… this will take you to… you guessed it, your business’ Google Places page.

If you haven’t done any local SEO, your listing is likely unclaimed. That means that to Google’s knowledge, nobody owns it. So the first step is claiming your listing so that you can edit and optimize it later.

How do I know if my Google Places page is claimed already?

Look in the upper-right corner of the page and it will say either “Owner-Verified” or “Business Owner? Claim Your Listing”… the exact spot that this will appear is shown in the image right below.

Google Places Verified Listing Example

When you go to claim your listing, you’ll have to verify it either by phone or by snail mail. This is a pretty straight-forward process and Google provides very clear, step-by-step instructions. You shouldn’t have much trouble with this.

Once the Google Local (or Places, or Maps, or whatever you want to call it) listing is claimed and verified, you can start editing it and optimizing it.

I don’t want to bore you to death with all the details right here so what I’ll do instead is link to some places that have good information on how to go about optimizing your Google Places listing so that you can appear in the searches.

Finding A Skilled, Trustworthy Local SEO Company in MD/DC/VA

Unfortunately, a lot of SEO companies are run by less-than-savory individuals. I hear sob stories almost daily from prospects that have been victimized by so-called SEO firms in the past.

It’s becoming increasingly hard to find local SEO firms in Baltimore or the MD/DC/VA area that are trustworthy worthy experts, yet still reasonably priced.

Here are a few tips on hiring a good SEO company:

Don’t go cheap –  SEO is very much a space where you tend to get what you pay for. Some local SEO services are very cheap… like, just a couple hundred dollars per month. Others, are very expensive… several thousands per month. In general, you can expect to get what you pay for. If something seems too good to be true, it is.

Get references –  Real SEO experts will have no problem showing you success stories and being able to prove that they worked on it. Request references and case studies and then ask them specific questions about the case studies to gauge just how involved they really were with the project.

Ask about a guarantee –  More and more, the best SEO agencies are incorporating either guarantees, or performance-based pricing packages into their offerings. It makes sense because a good local SEO campaign takes months to execute and should be thought of as a partnership. There’s no reason that you should have to bear all the risk. Choose a company that’s confident enough in themselves to take on a little risk and responsibility for the outcome of their work.

When in comes to local SEO in Baltimore, Columbia, Maryland, Washington DC, or Virginia… no internet marketing company holds a candle to us.
